Family Managed Respite

Family managed respite is a flexible self-directed support that provides family members or guardians with an opportunity to have a periodic break from the daily responsibilities of caregiving.

While often referred to as “in-home respite,” in fact the support can take place almost anywhere the family chooses – the family home, the home of a caregiver, out of town, or as part of a vacation.

Who is eligible to use the service?

Families who have an adult or child living at home who has been identified as having an intellectual or related disability.

If necessary, an appeal process can be initiated by contacting the Supervisor, Individual & Family Directed Supports.

How do I access this service?

Referrals are received from any source – family members, health and social service professionals, or school-based personnel.

The immediate and future needs of the family are discussed and eligibility to receive assistances and subsidy is determined.

Families must complete the “Common Application” form, part of the Chatham-Kent Co-ordinated Access for Developmental Services (CADS).  This is done most often as part of a visit to the family home by the Supervisor, Individual & Family Directed Supports.  This application will enable the family to have easier access to other related services.

How does it work?
to have easier access to other related services.

A simple plan is prepared by the family.  It will include the respite periods required, who will provide the support, the general outcomes expected and the anticipated cost.

With assistance from the Agency as necessary, the family recruits, hires and trains their worker.  The family enters into a contract with the worker.  Payment for services is made by the family who then completes a requisition form and receives a cheque from the Agency.

Other frequently asked questions:

Q. How much subsidy can a famiy expect to receive?
A. Under normal circumstances, up to $950 per year.

Q. What if additional respite is required?
A. Families are encouraged to seek additional funds and
will be considered based on need and availability of
resources.  A small “emergency fund” is available to assist
    with crises.

Q. How much do families pay to their workers?
A. The amount varies and is often dependent on the
relationship the provider may have with the family, or the
    nature of support required.

Q. Is there a waiting list?
A. No, and not for the foreseeable future.

Q. Can I pool other funds with my respire allocation?  (ie.
    SSAH, ACSD)
A. Yes.  In fact families are encouraged to do so.  The
Agency will assist families to co-ordinate this effort to their
   fullest advantage.
