Introduction to History

Every attempt has been made to be accurate in retelling the events and stories. It is unfortunate that space, time and resources have prohibited the writers from including all of the people, facts and events that have contributed to the rich 40 year history of community living in Wallaceburg.

The 50s
In the beginning parents were often frustrated and angered to find that their children at school age were to be excluded from their neighborhood classrooms because of a low I.Q.  Other families from across Ontario were perplexed to learn that their son's and daughter's could not move to the overcrowded institutions provided by the Province of Ontario.

The 60s
Schooling remained a central concern for the Association throughout the 1960's. The number of students attending the Mary Jane School peaked during the first few years at 11. In a brochure it is noted that "42 volunteer helpers took care of the children every day." Need for more space necessitated a new site, and the former Nolan School was acquired.

The 70s
The dawning of the 70's brought with them an idealism that was spawned in the 60's. The earlier peace marches, women's liberation and back to the land movements had paved the way for communities of interest to develop social systems that promoted a sense of equality and involvement.

The 80s

The early 1980's brought more money and a continued commitment from government to respond to pent up demand for services.  In 1981 the Special Committee for the Disabled and Handicapped tabled its report in the House of Commons and in it put forward 130 recommendations for action. The Committee's complete work, entitled Obstacles, provided encouragement and hope in all parts of Canada.

The 90s

The 1990's...A Commitment to Change

In an association document prepared in early 1994 is found the following statement-    

"Accepting the challenge to act on opportunities and direct energy and resources towards improving self determination and full community participation for all persons with a developmental disability."
